Writing East Midlands is the writer development agency for the region. We run creative writing events and projects and we develop opportunities for emerging and established writers.
We work in partnership with a broad range of cultural organisations including schools, universities, arts venues, museums, libraries, producers and local authorities to encourage relationships between writers and their communities.
For writers we run workshops, writing courses, mentoring schemes, critical appraisals, and one-to-one career development sessions. We organise residencies over varying lengths of time in all sorts of settings. Some connect local writers to new local audiences, or support other arts activity.Others may help to uplift literacy and creativity in a school, contribute to feelings of well being in a group of elders, or offer an outlet for self-expression in a young offenders unit.
Do contact us if you have an idea for a residency and we’ll be only too pleased to talk.
Residencies also play a large part in our work with young people. We not only inspire young people to take an interest in writing but we also give them a space to perform their work at the very popular Lyric Lounge spoken word festivals, which have traveled the region since 2009 as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Finally, we work with partners to help put on all sorts of festivals ranging from Alt.Fiction which has made the East Midlands a destination for fans of horror, sci fi and fantasy writing, to Nottingham’s new Festival of Words which will hopefully become a prominent landmark in the national literature calendar over the next few years.
