Alfreton Library, Severn Square, Alfreton DE55 7BQ
A FREE taster LoveLit writing workshop for adults with Ann Thorsson, part of the writing ambitions workshop programme presented by Arts Derbyshire.
Using an extract from her debut novel, Downhill, author Ann Thorsson will show participants how layout, structure and sentence length can be used to give a better visual impact for the reader. This workshop is suitable for both experienced writers and beginners.
Set in the 1980s, in the fictional coal-mining town of Castle Ridge, near Chesterfield, Downhill is a gritty drama about the complicated lives of Ged and his ‘Lady Juliet’, Julie. For those who remember this formative era in social history, Downhill is a nostalgic trip back in time to lip-gloss, classic rock music, the Miners’ Strike, Maggie Thatcher…it’s all there!
Originally from Chesterfield, Ann now lives in Iceland (in a house by the sea, just outside of Reykjavík). She still maintains strong links with the North of England, as the old saying goes ”You can take the girl out of the North, but you can’t take the North out of the girl!”
Inspired by her Northern heritage, Ann began writing Downhill as part of an Advanced Creative Writing course while completing her BA (Honours) degree in English Language and Literature through the Open University.
She is currently working on her next novel; a dramatic chiller entitled Dark Dreams.
Ann will be at Alfreton Library to talk to readers and sign copies after the workshop until 3.45 pm.
