Join Tamera Howard for a creative writing workshop for writers aged 18+ covering
•The first draft: spotting weaknesses as well as strengths. What to keep, what to delete? Working and reworking
•What to look for when editing? Are you saying too much or too little? When to wrap up and submit
•Endings: epiphanies, twists and other methods.
•Tips on short story competitions
The short story world is more condensed than the world of a novel, but its emotional impact can be as wide-ranging as a novel. What skills do you need to make an impact and render the story memorable?
Tamera Howard will be facilitating six different workshops looking at different elements of the short story, including character, voice, structure, plot, setting and description, pacing and dialogue, editing and endings.
You will learn how to read like a writer and have your own work discussed in class. You will be given the opportunity to explore and develop your creativity as well as build the confidence to start your own collection of stories. Through a combination of exercises, reading material, group discussions and feedback, you will be on track to find your voice and demonstrate your newly acquired skills. But most importantly, you will be on the road to inspiration to continue with your short story writing.
The workshops are designed to be standalone or why not attend them all? All genres of writing are welcome. There are no additional costs associated with the workshops. Please bring a notebook and pen, or a laptop if you are more comfortable typing. Please note that you may be asked to close your laptop during class discussions. Please note that these workshops are aimed at adults.
Workshops are led by local writer, Tamera Howard who works with both adults and young people teaching creative writing. She has an MA in Creative Writing and is working on a second novel. Tamera was recently a project writer on the Writing Ambitions- Derbyshire Residencies Scheme.
