TakeOff Festival Script in Hand : Opportunities for Artists, Writers and Companies
TakeOff Festival : 18th – 20th October 2017, Durham City.
Deadline for submissions : Tuesday 12th September, 12pm.
Are you a writer, artist or producer with a new play that you feel has something important to say to young audiences?
Fewer and fewer commissions of new plays for young audiences mean that children and young people are not being exposed to the words and ideas found within well-crafted plays. As part of this year’s delegate programme, TakeOff Festival 2017 will include 4 script-in-hand readings of pieces of new writing that deserve exposure.
TakeOff is England’s leading festival of theatre for children and young people and the biennial meeting point for professionals working in this field. By presenting work Script in Hand, you will be sharing it with other artists, producers and programmers who may be interested to support you to take it to full production. Script in Hand will be hosted by Mike Kenny, one of the UK’s best regarded children’s playwrights.
We are looking to select 4 pieces to present Script in Hand at TakeOff Festival on the afternoons of Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th October 2017.
Each excerpt should be presented as a rehearsed reading and should be no more than 20 minutes in length. There will be an opportunity to put the piece in context and to discuss the work with a small group of delegates.
The play’s the thing, so please do not offer work that is already staged, we are only interested in the sharing of words and ideas in very new writing. We will select work that is urgent, important and beautifully crafted.
We welcome submissions from individual writers and other artists as well as from companies, but you must be able to coordinate the 20 minute sharing in Durham.
If you are selected, TakeOff Festival will offer you;-
• A 30 minute slot in the delegate festival on either Wednesday 18th or Thursday 19th October to share your work
• Inclusion in the delegate brochure details of the piece and information about the lead artists
• £250 towards the costs of presenting the work at the festival
Please note that Script in Hand is not envisaged to require any technical or staging support.
To apply, please send us no more than 2 sides of A4 including;-
• A brief synopsis of the play
• A brief description of the play’s journey to date (how it was inspired, commissioned, researched)
• A brief biography of the playwright and any other key artists involved
• Why you think this play is important to a young audience
• Your contact details
Please also send the extract of the play that you would like to present at the festival. (Please note that extracts should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length, but you are welcome to propose something shorter if appropriate)
Deadline for submissions : Tuesday 12th September, 12pm. Please send your submission to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject heading TakeOff Script in Hand. Successful applicants will be contacted by Friday 22nd September.
If you wish to discuss your submission, please email Miranda Thain in the first instance – email@example.com
