Writer Development Opportunities at The Lyric Lounge

Posted on 17th July 2009

Hello Writerly People

In case you haven’t heard, Lyric Lounge is a whole week of events starting on July 25th, based at the Y Theatre (home of Word! and Shortfuse) and is part of the Cultural Olympiad. The main aim of the Lyric Lounge is to develop your creativity and so it will provide a week of opportunities, inspiration and connection.

Writer Development Opportunities:
Broadcast your work! – in the form of words, pictures or MP3’s – upload your work to the Media Wall at http://lyriclounge.co.uk/main/#media and put it in front of people. Get noticed, inspire others.

One to Ones – come along any weekday of the Lyric Lounge 11am – 1pm for a One To One about your poetry or reading with Lydia Towsey (Director of the Lyric Lounge & poet) or with Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze (Internationally acclaimed poet and Festival Patron) or with Alison Dunne (Bookdoctor and poet).

Influential on the poetry scene and editor of Staple magazine – Wayne Burrows will be talking 10 -12 on Saturday 25th about Staple magazine, and all are invited to ask such awkward questions as what editors look for, how work gets chosen, and why running a small press so often resembles a kind of controlled chaos.

On Tuesday 28th 2.30 – 4.30pm there will be a panel discussion, looking at the relationship between ‘page’ and ‘stage’ in poetry. Join four poets to discuss the relationship between ‘written’ and ‘spoken’ poetry. Michael Brome (spoken word artist), Graham Norman (Leicester Poetry Society), Alison Dunne (that’s me!), and Lydia Towsey (WORD!) will debate the divide and take questions from the floor. Find out about the scene, share your perspective, join the debate.

Writer and Hello Hubmariner, Aimee Wilkinson and Nottingham Writers Studio’s Ali Stoneman bring you ‘Character Box’, a practical fiction writing workshop designed to get the creative juices flowing, inviting you to discuss the different aspects of a character and inspire you with a different approach to find the beginnings to a whole new story and that is on 11 -12 noon on Sunday 26th.

Inspiration:
Lots of poetry books & materials to inspire new work
FREE workshops – see the website for details
Art Exhibition & drawing drop in sessions
And of course the nightly events – from John Hegley to brand new work from young people & everything in between. See the Lyric Lounge website for full details.

Connection:
Lyric Lounge is aiming for a contemporary salon atmosphere, relaxed discussion, enjoyment and just general talking with writers and artists during the week. Meet interesting, new, like minded people over coffee or a drink or catch up with the ones you already know.

Please forward this message onto anyone who could take advantage of these great writing opportunities!

There’s never been anything like the Lyric Lounge in the region – make sure you’re part of it. http://lyriclounge.co.uk/
