The Lyric Lounge is seeking enthusiastic young people to perform at The Y Theatre in July.

Are you aged 13-19 and into poetry, lyric writing or rapping? Want your voice to be heard? Fancy developing your lyrical genius…? Organisers of ‘Lyric Lounge’ are seeking enthusiastic young people to perform at The Y Theatre in July as part of the celebrations for the Special Olympics. We’d like you to work with artists Rob Gee and Steph Fawcett, attend some workshops and create exciting new work for a performance called ‘The Edge’. No experience necessary. Want to know more? Writing East Midlands is leading a steering group of stakeholders in The Lyric Lounge, part of Renaissance East Midlands’ contribution to the region-wide Igniting Ambition programme that is being undertaken in partnership with Arts Council England East Midlands.

The aim is to create a series of temporary, transformed performance spaces for spoken word/poetry events. The Lyric Lounge will be an accessible, temporary venue in a museum, library, heritage property, educational institution, arts venue or found space, with an ambience to attract young people and a range of culturally diverse participants/audiences.

New writers, young people, children, established local poets and visiting high profile performers will be encouraged to present work and there will be associated participatory activity.

Stage 1 of the project will be delivered in Leicester from 25-31 July 2009 as part of the Cultural Programme for the Special Olympics (Igniting Ambition Showcase 2) and with the Y Theatre as core venue. 2 Funky Arts, working with WORD, has been contracted as Project Manager to deliver Stage 1 which is also supported by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and Leicester Libraries.

Stage 2 (from 2010) will see Lyric Lounge venues temporarily established in other locations across the East Midlands over the period to 2012 (linking to the ongoing structure of sub regional platforms/Festivals as part of the Igniting Ambition project). The aspiration is to establish fifteen Lyric Lounge venues over this period.
