Digital Writer-in-Residence Mubu

Writing East Midlands as appointed writer Rod Duncan as the MuBu Digital Writer in Residence. Rod will visit and write about MuBu projects around the East Midlands and promote the project through the use of digital and interactive media.

Rod Duncan

Born in Wales in 1962, Rod was identified as dyslexic at the age of 8. He clawed his way through the education system, avoiding writing as far as possible. It was in 1990 (after the advent of the word processor) that he began to develop his storytelling skills. He describes himself as having: ‘a conflicted relationship with the written word’ and as being: ‘endlessly curious and compulsively creative’.

Rod writes fiction, non-fiction, screenplays and poetry. His first novel, Backlash, was published in 2003 and was shortlisted for the John Creasy Memorial prize for the best debut crime novel of the year. Other titles include Breakbeat (2004), Burnout (2005) and The Mentalist (2007).

He has had 2 short screenplays produced, one of which won awards at the Leicester International Short Film Festival. He is now working on a feature film called ’43 Pounds’ with Director Rhys Davies. This movie is currently in production. He is also writing a screenplay ‘Interviews with a Serial Killer’ in collaboration with Oscar-shortlisted director, Chris Jones.

In addition, Rod talks, performs and teaches creative writing.

Passionate about narrative of all kinds, he believes that: “Fiction is ultimately autobiography, just as autobiography is ultimately fiction. The defining characteristic of a story is not whether the events actually happened, rather, it is what effect the telling of them has on the listener.”
