On the Business of WritingThroughout this residency, writer Cathy Grindrod will introduce students of the Nottingham University Creative Writing undergraduate degree programme to the practice of being a freelance writer. Cathy will provide mentoring and Personal Development Planning (PDP) as well as running workshops on the business of writing and leading workshops in community settings. Nottinghamshire County Council will be working in partnership on this programme providing placements for the students to work with disabled community groups.
Outputs will be new creative writing from Cathy Grindrod on the Business of Writing that will become a resource as well as a creative piece.

Cathy Grindrod
Cathy Grindrod has lived in Derbyshire for the last 10 years and arrived there via Lancashire and Nottinghamshire. She is a widely published poet with five poetry collections, and was Derbyshire Poet Laureate from 2005-2007. She also wrote the libretto to ‘More Glass Than Wall’, an oratorio performed by VIVA orchestra, soloists and 180 school children, nominated for a BBC Radio 3 British Composer of the Year Award.
Her theatre writing includes ‘Always in the Afternoon’, a monologue which recently won second prize in the regional East Midlands Airport/New Perspectives Monologue Writing Competition, performed at Lakeside Arts Theatre, Nottingham. Her first full-length play, showcased at Theatre Writing Partnership’s 2010 Momentum Playwriting Festival, is entitled Always in the Afternoon.
Cathy has undertaken several poetry commissions and has read her work at a number of venues regionally and nationally.
She works as a Freelance Literature Consultant, poetry tutor and mentor.
