It’s Our Write is a practical guide to engaging Roma and other EAL (English as an additional language) pupils with creative writing.
The guide has been developed by Roma story-teller and writer Richard O’Neill and was commissioned by Writing East Midlands and The Mighty Creatives after a three year writer residency at Babington Community College and Medway Community Primary School in Leicester. It’s Our Write provides a suite of practical, entry level creative writing exercises that teachers can replicate in their own settings to encourage creative writing confidence and skills in those who may have very little prior experience. It also provides insight and learning drawn from the writer residency and useful links for the support organisations in other regions of England.
You can download the toolkit for free here, or you can purchase a hard copy at £5 plus postage by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org with your details.
Richard O’Neill is able to deliver CPD events for schools looking to improve their engagement with Roma pupils in particular. Richard has many years experience of working with Roma pupils in schools across the country as a story-teller and writer, and has a wealth of best practice and insight to share. If you are interested in hosting a CPD event for your staff please contact email@example.com
“Pupils engaged with writing and recognised that they were in the driving seat, and that they had a good map reader with Richard. For staff, the project enabled collaborative planning and moved lessons away from step by step blocks and into the realm of true creation.” Subject Leader for Performing Arts, Babington Community College, Leicester.
