I Am An American Poet: This Is American Poetry

Posted on 1st May 2010

When Lucille Clifton was asked what American poetry was, she replied, ‘I am an American poet: this is American poetry’. Not an elusive answer, her response speaks to the huge variety and scope of American poetry today. With this in mind, the Nottingham Poetry Series brings five very different voices together for four days of intense workshops, craft talks, conferencing, and community.

Tickets for I Am An American Poet: This Is American Poetry will be on sale from May 1 at noon BST. There will be 40 full-price all-inclusive passes available at this point and 20 concessionary-rate passes. You can buy tickets at http://nottinghampoetryseries.bigcartel.com/ .

About the types of available tickets:
An all-inclusive pass includes seven workshops over the four days; lunch on Friday and Saturday; dinner on Saturday; invitations to all informal gatherings. (£75/£25 concessions.)

On June 11, booking for all-inclusive passes will close, and on June 18 all remaining places in workshops will be available for individual (‘à la carte’) booking. Workshops booked individually cost £12 (£8 concessions) each; lunch is not included.

Individual conferences are on sale from May 1 at noon BST. These 20-minute meetings are a chance for you to speak one-on-one with a poet about your work. (Sorry, we cannot guarantee which poet will meet with you.) Conferees will be asked to submit a sample of their poetry for discussion with the poet; each poet will read the poems and prepare notes on them; participants will receive oral feedback. These meetings will also be a chance for you to ask any questions about your writing you may have. Individual conferences are not part of the all-inclusive pass and are bookable by anyone from May 1 until they are sold out. There will be 20 places available (£20/£12 concessions).

Readings are free and open to the public! There will be three readings over the four days, plus one very special event in London on July 20th (details to follow; bookable after June 20th, £4/£3 concessions).

Events will take place at locations across Nottingham. To receive emails pertaining to the American Poets events, please write to thisis@nottinghampoetryseries.com.
