Our Write Here residencies team up writers with venues and organisations to nurture and develop creative talent.
Write Here is Writing East Midlands’ Writer in Residence Programme – through which we place writers in culturally or socially significant venues and help them generate new work and reach new audiences.
Since 2009 WEM has delivered over 60 writing residencies in all the major cities and towns in the East Midlands. We’ve worked with a range of organisations and institutions including Nottingham Contemporary, HMP Sudbury and Foston Hall Prison, Royal Derby Hospital, Mansfield Palace Theatre, Kennedy House Homeless Shelter and Cities of Sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. In primary and secondary schools our writing projects help children and young people to think creatively, engage in the arts, build enthusiasm for writing and improve literacy skills.
The value of Write Here residencies can’t be overstated, both for the local communities and audiences and for the writers in place. Writing residencies allow time for the writer to explore new work and ideas, engage with new audiences and to also inspire others to write creatively themselves. Though our years of experience in delivering residencies around the region, we’ve been gathering a wealth of evidence which demonstrates that creative writing and storytelling positively affects the general well-being of those who participate. Participants say that their confidence levels are increased and in some cases literacy levels are improved and a stronger sense of community cohesion, social connectiveness and pride is also created.
We are always interested in developing new ideas for writer residencies with partners and can assist with fundraising support, sourcing and contracting appropriately skilled and experienced writers, and project management. More and more frequently, we are delivering Arts Award through Write Here residencies. If you work in a community or school setting and are interested in developing a Writer Residency, or if you are a writer looking to expand your experience in the community, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to explore ways in which we can work together.
