Write Here! Ashbourne Festival Poetry Competition, Ashbourne, Derbys

In commemoration of one hundred years since the First World War, writer in residence Sian Tower delivered World War One poetry workshops in 5 local primary schools.

The intention of the residency was to generate entries for Ashbourne Arts Festival’s Young Poet’s Writing Competition. The competition prizes were presented at Ashbourne library as part of the festival, which also played host to an exhibition of some of the work produced. The winning poets read their work at Poetry in the Garden, one of the key festival events of the year.

Paricipating Schools:

Young poets who took part in the workshops told us:

“It was so awesome because we could put our imagination on paper.”

“I learnt a lot about WW1 poetry.”

“My favourite bit was writing the poem because it was really fun.”

“I never knew (poetic writing) was this interesting.”

The residency led to the establishment of a regular group of young writers in Ashbourne, led by Sian Tower and supported by Writing East Midlands.
