Our Activities

Writing East Midlands is the writer development agency for the region. We work closely with a range of organizations including schools, universities, galleries, museums and libraries, to help build strong relationships between writers and their communities. Our activities include:

Routes to Writing:

At the heart of what we do, Routes to Writing provides opportunities for writers at all stages of their careers, including professional development, critical reads and mentoring.

The Writers’ Directory:

Giving writers across the region a platform to showcase themselves and their work, The Writers’ Directory is also an essential resource for organizations looking for a writer in their area.

Write Here:

Our writer in residence programme teams writers with venues and organizations to nurture and develop creative talent. Our residencies have taken place in a range of venues including prisons, museums, galleries and hospitals.

The Lyric Lounge:

Our flagship spoken word festival tours the East Midlands with energetic new and established voices such as Jess Green, Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, Rob Gee and Mark Grist in a mix of open mic, workshops and professional performances.

The Writing School:

In Leicester, Derby and Nottingham The Writing School builds on 60 years of experience to provide courses, workshops and seminars taught by writing professionals to help writers of all abilities to develop their own work.

The Writers’ Conference:

Our hugely successful one-day conference welcomes writers at all stages of their careers, and gives them opportunities to meet and work with industry professionals, agents and editors.

Arts Award

We’re proud to be involved with the National Arts Awards through our Young Writing Groups. Our groups are made up of young East Midlands writers working with dedicated established writers and educators. Since we began working with young writers we’ve awarded Arts Awards in all the categories (Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold).
