Writer Biography

I am a professional writer with more then seventy publications for children and young people. The natural world is my major inspiration. I was brought up in Yorkshire and read English and European Literature at the University of Warwick. After that I worked in a Hull fish factory, a Mayfair art gallery and an office in London. I taught at schools in Tower Hamlets for twelve years. All this time I was writing, and when I was at home with my baby daughter I finished my first novel, `Diamond.’ We moved to a house in the middle of a field in Derbyshire for sixteen years. Now we live on the edge of the city. There’s a hill opposite with hares, herons and kingfishers. Derbyshire has been my mind’s setting for Mine, Silkscreen, 11 o’clock Chocolate Cake, The Snow Whale and Kevin the Blue.
