Writer Biography

Karen Maitland is fascinated by the myth, magic and life of the Middle Ages, which she draws on for her novels. Her first medieval thriller, COMPANY OF LIARS, concerns a group of travellers fleeing from the Black Death. Her second medieval novel THE OWL KILLERS, combines the story of the beguinages, Cities of Women, with the myth of the medieval demon the Owl Man. She is published by Penguin.

Her first novel, The WHITE ROOM, was short listed for the Authors’ Club Best First Novel Award. COMPANY OF LIARS was short listed for a Macavity Award in USA and THE OWL KILLERS was short listed for a Shirley Jackson Award in USA and was selected by the American Library Association as one of best historical novels of 2010.

Karen’s latest medieval thriller is THE GALLOWS CURSE. & Treachery lurks in every shadow as King John’s brutal reign makes enemies of brothers, murderers of virgins and sinners of us all.&

Karen has also written two joint novels with her fellow MEDIVAL MURDERERS – Philip Gooden, Susanna Gregory, Michael Jecks, Bernard Knight, and Ian Morson – THE SACRED STONE and HILL OF BONES (Simon & Schuster).

    I have taught over 200 Creative Writing workshops for adults including Adult Education, WEA, Community Groups and Writing Groups. Course have ranged from regular evening classes to single day and full weekend courses.

    I have held three writer-in residence posts, including one year long post for the charity SACAR.
