Within few months of joining a local creative writing group three years ago, I had an idea for a middle grade novel which was a bit of surprise as I’d always written for adults. I’ve spent the last two years completing that novel. Last summer I received several positive rejections and a major agency had the full MS and requested future work. I attended an online editing course aimed at those with a complete MS and made major revisions to the novel. It is currently back out on submission to agents.
I’m now planning my second novel which is aimed at the YA market. After reading many current novels for MG and YA age groups in the last two years, I feel more aligned to YA in terms of topic and language.
I’ve previously worked in corporate communications and had a short story published in ‘Yours’ magazine plus a centre page article in the Shields Gazette. I haven’t submitted articles and stories widely. Novels are my main area of interest, so that’s my focus at the moment, although I enter the odd short story competition such as Costa and the BBC.
I also perform in an original indie band, playing keyboards and singing harmonies.
