Writer Biography

Playwright and theatre practitioner with over forty stage plays to his credit ranging from one-person shows to large-scale productions. A founder member of both Back Door and Big Pig Theatre companies, he has also written for BBC Schools Radio Drama and Swedish EB; his scripts for television – Boots and Saddles and Only the Lonely – were shortlisted for the Orange Prize and Yorkshire/Granada New Voices respectively. His play about Mary Shelley, Moon in Eclipse, was shortlisted for a Fringe First both at Buxton and Edinurgh and his play about non-League football, Big Time, was nominated by the Independent as one of the Best of the Fest and selected for a Celebration of the Beautiful Game at the Royal Festival Hall. His adaptataion of Lady Chatterley’s Lover for Buxton Opera House undertook a national tour and was chosen by Benedict Nightingale as one of his Top Five in the Times. Most recently he has dramatised the Letters of Jane Austen (Uncontained Arts touring & Edinburgh), The Country Child (Derby Theatre), the book & lyrics for Blonde, a new musical based on the life and times of Marilyn Monroe (Derby Theatre, Buxton Opera House) and the book for a new musical of Angela’s Ashes (Derby Theatre).

Author and tutor of degree level modules on Writing for Radio, Writing for Television, Writing for Performance and Playwriting for the University of Derby, where he is a regular contributor to the Theatre Arts programme.

    Writer for New Mills Community Play, Tin Hats an’ Telegrams; worked with local people to develop the final script for performance in New Mills Town Hall. Has also written for Derbyshire County Youth Theatre, Matlock Youth Theatre. North-East Derbyshire Youth Theatre and University of Derby Theatre Arts.

    Over forty plays produced for schools, youth theatres, studio theatres, main house shows and touring

    Has taught and led workshops on all aspects of writing for the past twenty years, with several students winning national awards, receiving radio commissions, etc.
