Young Writing East Midlands

One of Writing East Midlands’ core activities is to support, champion and create opportunities for the many young writers finding their voice in the region. We seek out opportunities and partnerships that enable as many young people as possible to enjoy writing for pleasure, in the inspiring company of professional writers, and develop their talent through a range of programmes.

Lyric Lounge – the celebrated pop-up festival of live literature and spoken word, providing performance, participation and workshopping opportunities and a chance to see performances from some of the poetry giants currently on the circuit – Kate Tempest, Kwame Dawes, Lemn Sissay, Jean Binta Breeze and many, many others have all graced the Lyric Lounge stage over the past six years.

Young Writers Groups – a network of creative writing groups led by professional writers, offering young writers between the ages of 9 and 19 an opportunity to develop their writing skills, explore a range of different forms from playwriting to poems, and spend time in the company of others who love writing as much as they do.

The Writer’s Den – a non-residential creative writing retreat for 9-14 years olds, usually taking place over a weekend and providing lots of opportunities for young writers to try out all kinds of different writing skills from graphic novels to ghost stories.

Write Here residencies – through our important relationships with schools, theatres, galleries and communities we place writers-in-residence throughout the region to engage with children, young people and their families.

Poetry by Heart – we coordinate the county contests of the national Poetry by Heart competition, for pupils in years 10-13.

Young Writer’s Newsletter – If you are a young writer, or the parent or teacher of a young writer, you can sign up to receive our young writers’ newsletter 3 times a year by emailing We send it out at the beginning of each new school term and it will provide you with all the information and inspiration you need to keep on writing!

We want to hear about your work with young writers! If you are an organisation or writer looking to work with young writers in the East Midlands, or if you are a school or college looking to involve your pupils in new writing projects, come and talk to us. We will be able to recommend suitable professional writers to lead your projects, advise on appropriate fees and safeguarding issues, and help you get your marketing messages out to the region’s literature sector.
